#271 on the list of "Things I Said I'd Never Do When I Was A Mother"

I swore I'd never give my kids Lunchables. I mean, really, I scoffed, those things are chemicals in a box! Any half-decent parent would simply buy some quality turkey slices and good cheese, roll those suckers up, and place in a tupperware with some cut up fruit, right? I mean, really, how long could that take? 5 minutes? (Insert condescending eye-rolling here.)

We are salad eaters around here! We demand variety and quality! Lean protein! Whole wheat! Legumes! My kids will eat as we eat! We will be the role models!

Tonight: My kids had hot dogs and Cookie Crisp cereal for dinner.

And last week, when Ben begged for a Lunchable for school, I not only said "yes," I joyfully squealed: "Ben! Look! They are on sale! 4 for $5! You can have four Lunchables!"

Oh, yes...and Mickey Mouse chicken nuggets, Kraft mac and cheese, and pancakes are a regular dinner staple around here.

I've learned you're only a know-it-all until you actually become a parent.

  1. If you have had a child who was on a self imposed hunger strike for FOUR years, you will give them WHATEVER they want, as long as they eat something resembling food.

    Just sayin'....

Been there, done that. I love it when they are on sale, because it mean less lunch packing!

  2. I swore I'd always make my own chicken nuggets. Um, not so much. Hello Dinosaur shaped nuggets! Twice a week! And bribing with dessert? Again, swore it would never be me. It's a daily happening around here.

  3. Haha, love this post. I think it's so true that you can never know what you will or won't do until you're there.

    I'm still loving your blog!

  4. Hah - very well said. It's exhausting trying to do it all perfectly all the time...I say bring on the Lunchables! I am not sure I know what a Lunchable is but I catch your drift! I had the exact same conversation with my kids about Cheese Strings...maybe Cheese Strings and Lunchables are the same thing? Umm anyone the point is: you are not alone! Louise x

  5. Oh the things I do I swore I never would.....Isn't there a book out there called something like "I was a good mother until I had children"? Yeah, we do what we gotta do to get it done.

  6. I laughed out loud when you were overjoyed the Lunchables were on sale. As I chomp on a Big Mac, I swear my daughter will never eat at McDonald's. Wishful thinking, right?

  7. It's a very rare "treat", but my oldest son loves lunchables. Really, there are worse things to feed them. Like donuts and brownies. Because those are for me.

  8. OMG! I am laughing so hard. I was at the grocery this week with my 23 y/o daughter. She was scheduled to substitute teach the following day. Normally, she does pack a salad. What did she do? She bought two Lunchables to take for lunch.

  10. I was THE WORST at making declarations before I had kids. That portable DVD player that I refused to by already installed in a new car? Yeah, two years later and I went and bought one that I have to lug out and attach to the headrests. What a fool I was.

  11. LMAO Yeah, sometimes it's just easier to grab things like these!

  12. I get excited when Lunchables are on sale, too. Pathetic.

And, like Becca, I was going to make my own chicken nuggets (with hormone-free, organic chicken, no less). Bwahahaha. Right.

  13. LOL when I had our oldest, she never ate that stuff. Then we had #2 and let up a little, then #3 and #4 came and everything went flying out the window.

  14. That is my favorite part of being a parent -- you get to listen to non-parents talk about what they will/won't do and get a good laugh.
